The Alliance of Drivers, Ghana, has vehemently rejected reports of a transport fare increase, effective July 22, 2024, describing it as illegal and misleading.
The association’s swift response comes amidst growing concerns among commuters and the general public regarding the purported hike in transport fares.
In a press release issued on July 19, 2024, the Alliance of Drivers expressed deep regret over the untimely passing of their National Chairman, Alhaji Yahya Siaka.
The statement then proceeded to address the contentious issue of transport fare increase, clarifying that there has been no official communication from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) to transport operators regarding any such increase.
The release emphatically urged the public to disregard any purported increase by concerned drivers, labeling them as thieves operating without government permission.
The Alliance of Drivers called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to arrest these drivers and their leaders, warning of a naked demonstration against the president if action is not taken.
According to the release signed by George Baafoa Owusu Afriyie, the national P.R.O for the association, concerned drivers and their leaders are stomach politicians working for the opposition party.
The statement assured Ghanaians that the Alliance of Drivers is committed to protecting their interests and maintaining stability in the transport sector.
This development has sparked widespread concern among commuters, who are already grappling with the economic hardships.
Many have expressed frustration and disappointment at the prospect of an illegal transport fare increase, which they say will only exacerbate their struggles.
As the situation unfolds, the Alliance of Drivers has vowed to take all necessary measures to ensure that the rights of commuters are protected and that the transport sector remains stable.
The association has also called on the government to take decisive action against those perpetrating the illegal fare increase.
