Thirty-eight (38) fishermen have been rescued following a robbery at sea off Senya Breku in the Central Region, thanks to a joint operation by the Marine Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The victims, who were in two locally manufactured canoes, were safely brought to shore after reports emerged that several fishermen had been left stranded at sea.

According to initial accounts, the fishermen had set out in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, for their usual fishing expedition, but were allegedly ambushed by armed hijackers in a black boat while returning to shore.

The assailants reportedly opened fire and stole outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the fishermen helpless in the water. The incident has raised concerns among coastal fishing communities, where such incidents are reportedly increasing.

Additional canoes linked to the attack have since been located.

At the same time, the Ghana Armed Forces initiated a search operation at dawn, approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Senya Breku, to rescue any remaining victims.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 26, the Force urged the public to remain calm and assured that further details would be shared as they become available.

The Criminal Investigations Department has also started recording statements from the rescued fishermen.
