GMet announces 2026 rainy season forecast

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has released its 2026 major rainy season forecast for southern Ghana, issuing an early warning aimed at safeguarding lives, property, and critical sectors of the economy. The forecast is expected to guide farmers, businesses, and local authorities in preparing for potential heavy rains and flooding.
According to GMet, the rainy season will begin in March and is projected to end between July and August. The agency is predicting above-normal rainfall along the eastern coastline and adjoining inland areas, including Accra, Tema, Cape Coast, Saltpond, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Koforidua, and Kade between April and June.
The projection raises concerns about possible flooding and flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone communities. Residents have been strongly advised to adhere to alerts and safety directives from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), local assemblies, and GMet to minimize risks.
While heavy rainfall is expected in some areas, GMet also warned of dry spells between March and April. These intermittent dry periods could disrupt crop growth, strain water resources, reduce reservoir inflows, and trigger early-season water stress in affected communities.
At the launch of Meteorological Awareness Month and the presentation of the 2026 Seasonal Forecast, the Minister of Communication, Digitalisation and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, emphasized the importance of discipline and preparedness in reducing weather-related risks.
He further announced government plans to upgrade GMet into an authority with enhanced regulatory and enforcement powers. Director-General of GMet, Eric Asuman, welcomed the move, stating that it would strengthen compliance, improve revenue mobilization, and ensure Ghana meets international meteorological standards.
