22 Togolese arrested for suspected illegal mining activities

The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department apprehended twenty-two Togolese nationals suspected of engaging in illicit mining operations within the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.
The suspects were apprehended on Friday, January 23, 2026, following the interception of a Kia truck bearing registration number BA 223-12 by a team of police officers. The vehicle was being operated by suspect Abdul Majeed Yakubu.
Upon interrogation, the occupants disclosed that they were nationals of Togo and were en route to Tuntumba, a notorious hub for illicit mining activities, with the intention of engaging in galamsey operations.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be transferred to the Ghana Immigration Service for the necessary immigration and legal proceedings.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated accordingly.
