Adum Footbridge traders decry harassment and appeal for permanent trading space

Traders operating around the Adum Footbridge in Kumasi have raised concerns over what they describe as persistent harassment by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) task force.

According to the traders, officers of the KMA task force frequently chase them away from the footbridge, disrupting their daily activities and affecting their livelihoods. They explained that although they are aware of the regulations against trading at the footbridge, they have been compelled to operate there due to the lack of alternative trading spaces.

The traders lamented that repeated attempts to relocate have proven difficult, as no permanent or affordable places have been provided for them to continue their businesses. They noted that the constant eviction has led to losses, anxiety, and uncertainty about their future.

“We are not trading here because we want to break the law, but because we don’t have anywhere else to go,” one of the traders said. “If the authorities can give us a permanent place, we will gladly move.”

The affected traders are therefore appealing to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and other relevant authorities to come to their aid by providing a designated and permanent space where they can carry out their trading activities legally and peacefully.

They believe that such an intervention will not only improve their livelihoods but also help reduce congestion and tension around the Adum Footbridge, ensuring order and safety for both traders and pedestrians.
