Accra: 141 suspected cybercriminals arrested in Tabora and Lashibi

Security agencies have conducted a coordinated early-morning operation, resulting in the arrest of 141 suspected cybercrime operatives in Tabora and Lashibi, who were involved in organized networks perpetrating mobile money fraud and business email compromise scams.
The operation was led by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Immigration Service headquarters, with 100 suspects apprehended in Tabora and 41 in Lashibi.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects are believed to be Nigerian nationals. During the operation, law enforcement officials seized 38 laptops and 150 mobile phones suspected of being used in the perpetration of cyber-enabled financial crimes.
Authorities also apprehended a Ghanaian landlord who allegedly harbored 100 of the suspects in his residence. Security officials emphasized that property owners have a responsibility to ensure their premises are not utilized to facilitate or perpetuate illicit activity.

The suspects are alleged to have engaged in a range of cybercrime activities, including mobile money fraud, romance scams, sextortion, business email compromise, and wire fraud.
Forensic analysis of the seized electronic devices is currently underway, and individuals found to be culpable will be processed in accordance with Ghanaian law.

The Cyber Security Authority urged the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious digital activities, and support national efforts to combat cybercrime.
While reaffirming that Ghana remains open to foreigners engaged in legitimate business, the Authority warned that cybercriminal activity will be met with decisive enforcement of the law.
