Ghana Card To Become Mandatory For Motor Insurance Starting January 2026

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced that the Ghana Card will become a mandatory requirement for all motorists purchasing or renewing motor insurance policies, effective from January 1, 2026.
This bold step, which is set to streamline processes and combat fraud, is part of the NIC’s ongoing efforts to modernize and regulate Ghana’s insurance sector. Dr. Abiba Zakariah, Acting Commissioner of Insurance, emphasized that the new rule is expected to improve the integrity of the industry while aligning with international financial services standards.
Key Details of the New Regulation:
Mandatory Ghana Card for Individuals: Starting in 2026, every individual wishing to buy or renew their motor insurance will need to present their Ghana Card at the point of sale.
Corporate Clients: For businesses or corporate clients, it will be necessary to provide a Tax Identification Number (TIN) alongside the Ghana Card for all motor insurance transactions.
Enhanced Security and Compliance: This regulation is designed to combat fraud, boost Know-Your-Customer (KYC) processes, and ensure greater Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance, ultimately benefiting the overall integrity of the insurance sector.
Streamlined Claim Management: The NIC believes that these measures will not only curb fraudulent activities but also improve the efficiency and transparency of the claims process.
International Alignment: The policy brings Ghana’s insurance practices in line with global standards, particularly in the financial services sector, which will promote greater trust and credibility both locally and internationally.
Motorists are urged to ensure that they have their Ghana Card ready before visiting insurance sales points from January 2026 onward. This move will simplify the insurance application process, make transactions more secure, and ensure compliance with the new requirements.
