Ghana not included in US Green Card review – Ablakwa clarifies

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that Ghana is not included in the United States government’s latest Green Card review and temporary immigration suspension.
Mr. Ablakwa stated that he received a formal briefing from Acting US Ambassador to Ghana Rolf Olson, who assured him that Ghana is not among the countries affected by the new measures announced by President Donald Trump’s administration.
Announcing the outcome of his meeting with the US envoy on Monday, December 1, 2025, the Minister said their discussions covered recent developments in Ghana-US relations and specifically the clarification that Ghana has not been included in the review targeting certain Green Card holders.
President Trump last week directed US authorities to review Green Card holders from selected countries after an Afghan national shot and killed two National Guard members. No official list of affected or exempted countries has been released publicly.
Mr. Ablakwa said the meeting also addressed several bilateral issues, including the restoration of five-year visas for Ghanaian travellers, the withdrawal of 15% tariffs on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa and other qualifying agricultural products, and ongoing arrangements for Ghanaian supporters preparing for World Cup activities.
He noted that the two sides engaged in discussions on enhanced security cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement, which will include increased intelligence sharing and expanded training exercises involving US military aviation assets, with all operations being coordinated through the relevant Ghanaian authorities.
On trade matters, the Minister expressed Ghana’s continued optimism regarding ongoing discussions under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), highlighting the government’s commitment to pursuing agreements that yield the most beneficial outcomes for the country.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana’s national interest remains paramount in all engagements with the United States.
