Chengdu Rongcheng FC received a US$70,000 fine after their supporters subjected Ghanaian forward Frank Acheampong to racist abuse during a Chinese Super League match on October 31.

Investigations revealed that Chengdu fans made “monkey calls”, hurled abusive remarks, and displayed offensive gestures, including repeated middle-finger signs—all targeting Acheampong’s skin color. This behavior was captured on video and widely shared online, prompting swift action from league authorities.

Under Chinese Football Association regulations, any racist, sexist, religious or ethnic discrimination by fans results in punishment for the club, regardless of intent. Because the abuse violated these rules, the CFA imposed:

  • US$70,000 fine
  • Closure of part of Chengdu’s stadium for one home game

Police also arrested two men involved. They were placed in administrative detention—which can last up to 20 days—and banned from entering football venues for 12 months.

Acheampong, who plays for Henan FC, has been one of the standout performers this season with 14 goals in 30 games.
