Former Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has formally declared her intention to vie for the General Secretary position of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as part of efforts to revitalize and reinvigorate the party for the 2028 general elections.

She made the announcement on her Facebook page on Monday, October 20 — her birthday — appealing to NPP supporters across the country to rally behind her campaign to restore unity and confidence within the party.

“Dearest Patriots, I come to you on this day of my birth with genuine regards. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our stormy face-off with ourselves and our base.

We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We lie not in a good place. However, as our great tradition had demonstrated over the years… we will thrive,” she wrote. Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful urged party faithful to remain resolute and optimistic, describing the NPP’s current internal challenges as a period of reflection and renewal.

“Scathed, we refuse to be burnt, and in the unlikely circumstance that we set ourselves in a blazing inferno… we will rise. It will shape us, mould us, and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready,” she added.

The former Ablekuma West MP also criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a “caretaker government” that deceived its way into office.

“This caretaker NDC government is there not just because they are preferred, they are there because they lied their way into government, amidst lofty promises, and caused belief in us to wane. But we will revive it,” she said.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful pledged to restore confidence and unity within the NPP at all levels — from polling stations to the national executive — as a foundation for reclaiming power in 2028.

“From the polling stations, through to the electoral areas, constituencies, and regions to the top, we will restore confidence in our party and unity amongst ourselves. That is the only dose we need to boot out this accident-of-a-government,” she stated.

Declaring herself “nurtured, proven, and prepared,” the former minister said she is ready to lead the NPP’s reorganisation process and help the party reconnect with Ghanaians.

“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you, the fighter you have always known… to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government,” she declared.

“I come to you in all humility, to ask you, dear patriots, to join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary,” she added.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful emphasised that the NPP must “re-shape, re-organise, and put ourselves in a good place to effectively represent the desired change and restore the belief of Ghanaians in us as the institutors of growth and development.”

She concluded her declaration with a message of unity and determination:

“Patriots, join me, let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome.”
