Sekondi Market collapse leaves one dead

Traders at the deteriorating Sekondi Market, together with the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Blay Nyamekye Armah, are urging the government to honor its commitment to redevelop the market into a modern facility.
Their appeal follows the tragic collapse of portions of the market on Monday, October 6, which resulted in the loss of one trader who sustained severe injuries.
Mr. Armah has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to prioritize the redevelopment of the market to prevent further casualties and improve trading conditions.
“H.E. President Mahama and Hon. Ato Forson, please have mercy on our market women, our mothers, who have suffered for 32 years. H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, we are crying for mercy, show compassion on us. Sekondi is crying out. H.E. President Mahama, please come and rebuild our market for us.”
“People are dying, crying, and getting injured. H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, we acknowledge your maternal role; we request that you use your influence to encourage the President to fulfill his campaign promise. We appeal to you in the name of God. This market is not suitable for human habitation,” he pleaded.
In an interview with Channel One TV News, traders expressed deep frustration over the delay and called for immediate government intervention to ensure their safety and restore confidence in the market’s future.
“We’re pleading with the government to provide support. We’re indebted and need to trade to pay off our debts. The government should immediately redevelop the market for us,” he stated.
