The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has directed all schools in the metropolis to inscribe the Ga word “Oobaakɛ” (meaning “welcome”) at their entrances as part of efforts to promote and preserve the Ga language.

According to the Mayor, the inscription will serve both as a cultural reminder and an educational tool, helping pupils become more exposed to the Ga language while instilling in them a strong sense of identity and pride.

He gave the directive on Thursday during a working visit to several schools, including Martyrs of Uganda R/C Basic School in Mamprobi, the Ministry of Health (MOH) Basic School, the 28th February Road Primary & Kindergarten, and the Peter Odartey Lamptey Memorial JHS, where he also distributed stationery and welcomed new entrants.

During an interaction with a Ga language teacher at the Martyrs of Uganda R/C Basic School, Hon. Allotey reiterated his commitment to ensuring that Ga is taught in all schools in the metropolis.

“As Mayor, I will ensure that the Ga language is taught in all schools in the metropolis. It is our heritage and must be passed on to the younger generation,” he said.
