President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, removed Chief Justice Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office, effective immediately.
The decision follows the receipt of the report of the Committee of Inquiry established under Article 146(6) of the Constitution to investigate a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori, calling for the removal of the Chief Justice.
Upon reviewing the petition, extensive evidence, and testimonies, the Committee concluded that the allegations of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been adequately proven.
As such, it is recommended that she be removed from office. In accordance with Article 146(9) of the Constitution, the President is required to act in conformity with the Committee’s findings and recommendation.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, issued a statement on Monday, September 1, 2025, announcing the lawful removal of the Chief Justice.
He ensured the public that the process was conducted in strict accordance with constitutional requirements, with both parties given a full opportunity to present their cases.
