Ablekuma North Violence: Eight guilty parties convicted, fined GH¢6,000 each

Eight men involved in violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North by-election have been convicted and sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court. Each was ordered to pay a fine of 500 penalty units (GH¢6,000) or, in default, serve 24 months in prison.
The convicts — Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba) — appeared before His Honour Isaac Addo on Friday, August 29, 2025. They all pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against them.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at the Methodist Church Polling Station during the by-election. The victims included Hawa Mavis Koomson, former Minister of State and ex-MP for Awutu Senya East; Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader; and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Prosecutors notified the court that the accused individuals perpetrated an unprovoked attack while the victims were monitoring the proceedings. The initial assault targeted Mrs. Koomson and Mr. Saana, followed by an attack on Mr. Kwei.
The eight defendants faced charges of conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The trial commenced on Monday, August 26, and was subsequently expedited as all the accused acknowledged their involvement in the violence. The trial concluded with their conviction and sentencing today.
