Ghanaians will see a 20% rise in public transport fares beginning Friday, August 8, 2025. This decision comes after the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), in collaboration with major transport unions, announced an upward adjustment under the framework of the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.

In a joint statement signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman of the Council, the fare hike was attributed to three main challenges facing transport operators.

Firstly, despite a 15% fare reduction in May, there has been no matching decrease in the prices of spare parts and other essential goods. Secondly, the recent introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy has led to an 8% spike in fuel costs. Finally, deteriorating road conditions nationwide have resulted in increased vehicle maintenance expenses.

The new fares will affect all commercial transport categories, including intra-city “trotros”, shared taxis, long-distance buses, and cargo vehicles. “All commercial transport operators and companies are to comply with the new fares and visibly post them at their loading terminals,” the statement emphasized. The GRTCC has appealed for public understanding and cooperation as the revised fares take effect.
