Police officer among four killed in New York office building shooting.

On Monday evening, a gunman opened fire at a midtown Manhattan office building, killing four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, and wounding a fifth, before taking his own life.

The suspect was identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that Tamura is believed to have acted alone. An investigation into the possible motive of the gunman and the reason for choosing that particular location is currently underway.

Upon searching the vehicle Mr. Tamura used to travel cross-country to New York City, officers found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition and magazines, a backpack, and medication prescribed to Mr. Tamura, as stated by Tisch.

Footage from surveillance cameras showed the man getting out of a BMW just before 6:30 pm local time (0:30 am Tuesday CEST) with an M4 assault rifle in hand. He then headed towards a high-rise building located in a busy area of midtown, only a few blocks from Central Park.

The building is home to offices of top financial companies such as Blackstone and KPMG, the Irish consulate, and the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL).

A gunman attacked a building in the same part of Manhattan where the UnitedHealthcare CEO was shot outside a hotel in December.

The gunman entered the lobby, killing an NYPD officer, a woman, and a security guard. Additionally, he shot another man, who later gave a statement from the hospital.

The shooter proceeded to the elevator, permitting a woman exiting to walk past him unharmed. He then went to the 33rd floor, killing another person, before killing himself.

Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old of Bangladeshi background who had served as a police officer in New York City for three and a half years, was the officer fatally shot, as confirmed by Police Commissioner Tisch.

“He died as he lived. A hero,” she said, adding that he was married with two children, and his wife is pregnant with their third child.
