Ghana provides engineering equipment to Jamaican Defence Force for reconstruction

President John Dramani Mahama has presented engineering equipment and supplies to the Jamaican Defence Force in support of ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
The donation was presented on behalf of the President to Jamaica’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, during a visit by a Ghanaian delegation led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

According to a Facebook post by the Ghana Armed Forces on Monday, January 26, the visit enabled the delegation to assess ongoing reconstruction activities, receive updates on operations, and evaluate the welfare of Ghanaian troops participating in the multinational humanitarian mission.
As part of the engagement, the delegation toured various project sites where Ghanaian engineering personnel are involved in rebuilding and rehabilitating homes for residents affected by the disaster.

The works form part of broader humanitarian interventions aimed at restoring livelihoods in impacted communities.
The Foreign Ministers of Ghana and Jamaica praised the deployed teams for their dedication and professionalism, emphasizing that the collaboration between Ghana, Jamaica, and Guyana highlights strong regional solidarity and a shared commitment to humanitarian assistance.

Ghana travel guide Colonel Emmanuel Asia, Commander of the Ghana Engineering Reconstruction Team, later provided a briefing to the delegation on the progress of work, challenges encountered, and plans for the remaining phase of the reconstruction exercise.
The delegation consisted of the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi; the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu; and Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Caribbean Region, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah.
