Dr. Randy Abbey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has refiled a GH¢20 million defamation lawsuit against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC.

Following the dismissal of the initial case by the Accra High Court on Thursday, January 22, 2026, due to procedural defects, as it was filed by COCOBOD’s Legal Department instead of a private legal practitioner, Dr. Abbey has refiled the suit.

The new lawsuit, as reported by Graphic.com.gh, alleges that Abronye made defamatory statements on a radio platform, damaging Dr. Abbey’s reputation.

The plaintiff claims that Abronye falsely asserted that he visits cocoa farms and meets cocoa farmers in his personal chair driven from Accra.

The CEO further stated that Abronye alleged that he replaced the Director of Finance at COCOBOD with the intention of misusing COCOBOD funds, thereby causing harm to cocoa farmers.

Dr Abbey described the statements as a deliberate attempt to injure his reputation, stating that they were intended to diminish his personal and professional standing, particularly as the acting CEO of COCOBOD.

“The Defendant made the defamatory statements with a clear and deliberate intent to harm the Plaintiff’s personal and professional reputation, knowing that such statements would cause substantial damage to the Plaintiff’s standing in society,” the writ states.

Aside from seeking damages, Mr. Abbey is requesting a court order requiring Abronye to issue an unconditional retraction, publish an unqualified apology, and remove the defamatory statements within 14 days from the date of judgment.

The suit also seeks a perpetual injunction restraining Abronye or anyone acting on his behalf from publishing further defamatory remarks against the COCOBOD CEO.
