NPP flagbearer race: IGP to station at least 70 police officers at a polling station

The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced that a minimum of 70 police personnel will be deployed to each polling station for the forthcoming New Patriotic Party flagbearer election.
Speaking at a peace pact meeting at Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, January 22, 2026, the IGP assured the NPP of a violence-free election. He stated that all operational plans for the constituencies have been finalized, except for Bawku, where military assistance will be required, and a letter has been sent to the Ghana Armed Forces to augment security on January 31, 2026.
The IGP warned individuals who made public statements on social media about using macho men during the elections to desist from their intentions. Furthermore, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, has urged all flagbearer aspirants to commit to accepting the outcome of the January 31, 2026, election.
He emphasized that such a commitment would help build confidence among party members and enable them to campaign and vote freely for their preferred candidates without fear of division or intimidation.
The official emphasized that the contestants should confirm the transparency, inclusivity, and fairness of the process to date.
At the Peace Pact signing ceremony involving the five NPP flagbearer aspirants on Thursday, January 22, 2026, he urged them to commit to accepting the results and supporting the eventual winner among the five contestants.
He explained that this would enable party members to build sufficient confidence, allowing them to campaign and vote freely for their preferred candidate.
Former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye stressed the importance of fairness in the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer election process and encouraged the aspirants to uphold the party’s values throughout the process.
