Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under tragic circumstances in Latvia, of the government’s firm commitment to pursue justice.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Mr Ablakwa disclosed that he had met the family at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to personally convey his condolences and brief them on steps taken so far in response to the incident.

The North Tongu MP said a fact-finding team was immediately deployed from Ghana’s embassy in Germany, which has concurrent accreditation to Latvia, to obtain first-hand information on the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. He noted that the team has since submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry.

According to the Minister, Latvian authorities have confirmed that investigations into the case are still ongoing and have not yet been concluded.

Mr Ablakwa further revealed that he has formally notified the Latvian government of his intention to travel to Latvia to engage his counterpart and interact directly with investigators handling the matter. He said the delegation will include representatives of Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family to ensure transparency and direct family involvement in the process.

The Foreign Minister added that the Government of Ghana will also engage independent experts to review all investigative reports, particularly the final report expected from Latvian authorities, to inform the country’s next steps. He stressed that all actions being taken are geared towards ensuring justice for the deceased and his family, assuring them that the case remains a top priority for the government.
