New buses for STC, Metro Mass expected in 2026 – Transport Minister

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that the State Transport Company (STC) and Metro Mass Transit (MMT) will receive a fleet of new buses by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

During an appearance on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, December 22, 2025, the minister explained that this initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to revamp the two state-owned transport companies and enhance public transport services nationwide.

Mr Nikpe stated that the government has secured financial support from the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) to facilitate the acquisition of new buses by STC, with similar arrangements being made for Metro Mass Transit.

He further explained that under the first phase of the programme, STC is expected to receive between 250 and 300 buses, with additional buses to be procured annually to sustain operations.

“God willing, by the end of the first quarter of 2026, both state transport companies will begin to receive new buses,” the minister said.

According to him, the bus acquisition will be a continuous process, with plans to add more than 150 buses each year to strengthen STC’s operations. Metro Mass Transit will also receive new buses in phases annually to renew its fleet.

Mr Nikpe noted that before engaging the banks, the government carried out internal reforms to improve management, efficiency and accountability within the companies.
He said the reforms are already yielding positive results, as both STC and MMT have begun making profits despite operating with limited buses.

“The few buses they have are now making profits. This shows that if we support them with more buses, they will be able to pay for them,” he said.

The transport minister expressed confidence that the new buses would help improve transport services and ease travel for passengers across the country.
