The Western Regional Police Command has launched a probe into a fatal shooting incident at a mining company site located in Adelekezu, near Dadwen in the Axim District, which resulted in the death of a boy and led to the destruction of company property.

In a news release dated December 14, 2025, the Police confirmed that the incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

The Command has commenced investigations into a shooting incident that occurred at a Mining Company site, resulting in the death of a boy and destruction of properties belonging to the company.

Responding officers found extensive damage to property, including two 4/4 SUV vehicles, two tipper trucks, one pickup, and a Toyota Land Cruiser, all of which were burnt or damaged by the youth of the town.

Preliminary findings indicate that the incident followed a confrontation between some youth of Adelekezu and private security personnel at the mining site.

The Police explained that the youth allegedly attempted to enter the company’s concession, leading to a scuffle with the security men.

“In the process, they attempted to take one of the security men’s pump action gun from him, which he resisted, and fired, hitting the boy,” the release noted.

The victim was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital but “was pronounced dead on arrival.”

The Police said the death of the boy, whose name has been withheld, sparked anger among the youth, who went on a rampage at the site.

“They went on a rampage at the site, setting some properties of the company ablaze… and threatening to lynch the workers,” the statement added.

The Command said officers were able to rescue 11 workers during the disturbances. Five suspects — Gyenyame Owusu (38), Matthew Asamah (24), Nana Yaw (15), Yaw Opoku (16), and Kojo Agyei (21) — have been arrested “for causing harm and causing unlawful damage.”

The Western Regional Police Command has appealed for calm as investigations continue.

“The Command calls on the members of the Community to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation to ensure justice is served,” the statement, signed by Superintendent of Police Ms Olivia E.T. Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit in Sekondi, noted.
