Former Defence Minister Slams Government’s Unexpected Acquisition of Aircraft After Years of Refusal

Former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP Dominic Nitiwul has expressed strong reservations about the government’s decision to acquire new aircraft for the Ghana Air Force, seeking a detailed explanation for the previous rejections of similar proposals.

His comments came after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced on November 13 that the government would procure four modern helicopters, along with a long-range and medium-range aircraft, as part of efforts to modernize the military’s air capabilities.

The new aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2026 and 2030 and will significantly enhance the Air Force’s operational capacity, particularly in areas such as aerial surveillance, troop and logistics transport, maritime patrols, air defence, and disaster response.

Dr. Forson justified the decision, highlighting the challenges posed by the aging fleet and its high maintenance costs, which have limited the efficiency of the Air Force.

However, Nitiwul, who served as Defence Minister for eight years, questioned the rationale and timing of the government’s sudden change in stance.

Addressing Parliament on November 20, he expressed concern over the government’s previous rejection of calls for strategic lift capabilities, which left the military with limited air transport options.

“As someone who understands the military’s needs, I can attest that these strategic capabilities are essential,” Nitiwul said.

“Having served for eight years, I can confirm that we have always required these capabilities. It is not in Ghana’s interest to be without them.” He then challenged the government to take full responsibility for its prior decisions and provide a clear explanation for rejecting similar aircraft procurement proposals over the past five years.

“Take ownership of your decisions, offer an apology to the people of Ghana, and provide a justification for rejecting these purchases only to approve them now,” Nitiwul added.
