‘I Want to Be the African Hannah Montana’ — Ayra Starr Speaks on Becoming an Icon for African Girls

Nigerian singer and songwriter Ayra Starr has shared her ambition to become a defining cultural symbol for young African girls, revealing that her brand and artistic choices are intentionally crafted to inspire the next generation.
Speaking in an interview with Hitz FM on November 15, 2025, the “Rush” hitmaker explained that her vision is to build an influential identity similar to the impact of Hannah Montana — the Disney character portrayed by Miley Cyrus who became a global symbol for teenage empowerment and pop culture.
“It’s a very intentional thing for me because I have sisters, and I always say in interviews that I want to be the African Hannah Montana,” she said.
Ayra Starr noted that her unique style — both musically and fashion-wise — has naturally drawn young girls to her, particularly because no one in the industry currently mirrors her artistic blueprint.
“For now, there’s never been anyone like me in this space, so girls automatically look up to me,” she added.
While she embraces her growing role-model status, Ayra Starr emphasized that she still wants to remain authentic and true to her individuality.
“Being able to build trust for myself, where I’m not performing just because I want to be a role model but also doing what I want to do as an individual — I’m just finding the balance.”
