I have ordered the suspension of the GAF recruitment exercise – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to immediately suspend its ongoing recruitment exercise following the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra that claimed six lives.
The President gave the directive on Wednesday November 12, 2025, after receiving reports on the incident, which also left several others injured during the 2025/2026 recruitment screening exercise, describing the incident as “a sad loss”
He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The Ghana Armed Forces earlier confirmed that six people died and 28 others were injured when a large crowd of applicants rushed into the stadium forcefully which resulted in the stampede.
Five of the injured are currently in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital, while others are receiving treatment for various injuries.
