Mahama pledges to construct a Catholic university and regional hospital in Damongo

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish two major projects: the Catholic Science and Technology University and a regional hospital in Damongo, Savannah Region.
During a courtesy call by the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, the President made the announcement at the Presidency.

The initial funding for the proposed university will come from the $30 million grant pledged by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The regional hospital will also serve as a teaching facility for the proposed university, which will have a Faculty of Medical Sciences to train medical professionals.

The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revitalizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions during the discussion.
Archbishop Naameh, who proposed the name and location of the university, highlighted several educational and social issues affecting the northern sector and made a passionate plea for redress.

Attendees included Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to the President, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Office of the President and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
