Government withdraws 278 small-scale mining licenses amid regulatory breaches

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has revoked 278 small-scale mining licenses nationwide, citing non-compliance with mining regulations and expired operational permits.
The decision was announced by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Spokesperson and Media Relations Officer of the Ministry, in a Facebook post on Thursday, October 23, and is part of the government’s efforts to promote order and accountability in the small-scale mining sector.
Mr. Schandorf explained that the revocation was aimed at operators who failed to meet environmental and safety requirements or continued mining activities beyond their license validity period.
This action reflects Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah’s commitment to restoring discipline in the sector, following years of government concern over illegal mining, known as galamsey, and its impact on Ghana’s environment and water bodies.
The latest development signals the government’s tougher approach to sector reform as part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable and environmentally responsible mining practices.
