National security operatives in the Ashanti Region have commenced interrogations of eight individuals arrested for engaging in illegal mining activities at Kokonma in the Bosomtwe District.

Efforts are being intensified to identify the masterminds behind such illicit activities.

Illegal miners have encroached upon land designated for a school park at Konkoma in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, resulting in severe degradation of the area and posing a significant threat to the only public school and health centre in the community.

The miners’ quest for gold has led them to dig perilously close to the Konkoma D/A Basic School and the community health centre.

Mining activities occurring within 100 meters of a local school and health center have resulted in deep pits and unstable soil.

School administrators assert that this situation poses a significant safety risk to students, while abandoned pits have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, exacerbating health issues for patients at the nearby facility.

The Bosomtwe District Assembly has intervened, initiating a reclamation exercise to restore the degraded land. Security operatives are pursuing the individuals responsible for the mining activities.

According to Captain Retired John Kwame Jabari, Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, officials are making progress with interrogations.
