One dead, four injured in Ahwerease Odwira festival shooting incident

A violent clash occurred on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, during the 2025 Odwira Festival celebrations at Ahwerease in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region, resulting in one fatality and four individuals receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and reported that 34 suspects are in custody at Aburi, assisting with investigations.
A pump-action gun and a pistol were recovered from the scene, and Superintendent Tetteh stated that these weapons will aid in the ongoing investigation.
He assured that the police remain committed to maintaining peace and security throughout and after this year’s Odwira Festival, warning that anyone found culpable will face the full rigors of the law.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when Nana Semenhyia Asakrofa, Abokomahene of the Asona Family, performed traditional rites to lift the ban on drumming and noise-making, officially commencing the Odwira Festival.
However, a dispute reportedly broke out between the Abokomahene and the Abimuhene of Ahwerease over who had the authority to perform the ritual.
The disagreement quickly escalated, leading to gunfire by some young men, which left four people injured. One of the victims was later pronounced dead.
