NPA commits to partnering with Ghana Medical Trust Fund to address rising diabetes cases

Ms. Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) Administrator, and her team embarked on a working visit to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), where CEO Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo and his management team received them.
The meeting centered on bolstering collaboration between the two institutions to support a critical national health cause.
Mr. Tameklo expressed concern over the escalating non-communicable diseases, citing Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s record of over 5,000 new diabetes cases in eight months—a trend he described as “a clear sign of the urgency to act.”
He reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to partner with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund by identifying a key project for partnership, subject to Board approval, and expressed confidence in the positive impact this partnership will have on public health outcomes.
Ms. Obuobia Darko-Opoku emphasized that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, established under the MahamaCares initiative, aims to strengthen healthcare delivery, improve access to medical care, and combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.
She explained that the Fund is part of a broader effort to ensure sustainable healthcare financing and equitable health access for all Ghanaians.
Expressing gratitude for the NPA’s commitment, Ms. Darko-Opoku stated: “We are deeply encouraged by the NPA’s willingness to partner with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in this critical national effort. Together, we can make a meaningful difference by supporting hospitals, improving early diagnosis, and promoting preventive healthcare. This partnership transcends funding; it’s about saving lives and building a healthier Ghana for future generations.”
In his closing remarks, Mr. Tameklo added:
“Only a good man plants a tree whose shade he will never sit under. This is what the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is about—a legacy to be the oak tree under which every Ghanaian will one day sit. Through this Fund, we are reminded that truly, Mahama cares.”
