Mahama Set to Engage CSOs on October 3 regarding Galamsey Crisis

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to engage in a high-level dialogue with more than 50 civil society organisations on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra, with a focus on the pressing issue of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
As the government faces increasing pressure to escalate its efforts to combat galamsey, certain advocacy groups are calling for a state of emergency in mining communities ravaged by pollution and land degradation.
The meeting invitation, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, highlights the importance of fostering “frank and constructive dialogue” between the government and civil society, with the ultimate goal of harnessing collective expertise to tackle the national crisis.
Among the invited organisations are the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, IMANI Ghana, the Ghana Bar Association, the Ghana Journalists Association, and Eco-Conscious Citizens. Meanwhile, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced that all water bodies and forest reserves have now been classified as security zones in a bid to halt the destruction caused by illegal miners.
