Vice President leads a delegation to console families of helicopter crash victims

On Tuesday, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang headed a high-powered delegation from the Presidency to visit and console the families of the victims of the recent fatal military helicopter crash.
The visits covered the families of the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the NDC; Samuel Aboagye, Deputy NADMO Director; Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; as well as the families of two Cabinet Ministers – the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The Vice President was joined by senior government officials, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Chief of Staff at the Vice President’s Office Alex Segbefia, Senior Presidential Advisor Valerie Sawyerr, former Finance Minister Seth Terkper, and NDC General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, among other dignitaries.
The families warmly welcomed the delegation and engaged in private meetings, away from media scrutiny, to facilitate direct interaction with the bereaved.
Deputy Government Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, explained that the outreach aimed to assess the coping mechanisms of the families, particularly spouses and children, in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“The President believed it was essential to visit each family and ascertain their well-being, especially the spouses and children. In the President’s absence, the Vice President led the delegation today to pay visits to each of the victims’ families,” she stated.
Furthermore, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the dependents of the deceased and noted that measures were underway to ensure children still in school receive necessary assistance.
Ms. Muslim encouraged the public to donate to the Children’s Support Fund, revealing that GHS 2.3 million has been raised since the fund’s inception, with contributions from government, corporate institutions, and individuals.
“To contribute to the Child Support Fund for the families of the fallen victims, please visit the government communication portal for details,” she added.
The visits form part of ongoing national mourning efforts, which saw the government direct flags to fly at half-mast until the state funeral concluded last week.
