Ghana’s small-scale gold exports reached a record 66.7 tons, valued at $6.3 billion- Sammy Gyamfi

The Ghana Gold Board’s Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, announced that Ghana’s small-scale gold exports reached a record high of 66.7 tons, valued at approximately $6.3 billion, between January and August 2025.

“Small-scale gold exports executed through the Gold Board in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana have attained an unprecedented high of 66.7 tons, translating to an export value of approximately $6.3 billion. This signifies that the volume and value for January to August 2025 have already eclipsed previous totals,” he revealed.

Mr. Gyamfi made this disclosure while addressing the Mining and Mineral Conversion Conference in Accra on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. He noted that the figure surpassed the total small-scale gold exports for the entire year of 2024, which stood at 63 tons worth $4.6 billion.

The achievement was attributed to reforms implemented by the Ghana Gold Board in conjunction with the Bank of Ghana, including enhanced oversight of the gold supply chain, introduction of a transparent pricing system, abolition of the 1.5% withholding tax on unprocessed gold, and establishment of a taskforce to combat illegal trading and smuggling.

Mr Gyamfi remarked that the results reflect Ghana’s resolve, under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, to maximize the benefits of its natural resources for national development.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the Gold Board has started purchasing gold locally from large-scale mining companies, supplying some of it to the Bank of Ghana to boost the country’s reserves and support foreign exchange stability.

“These early successes demonstrate the Ghana Gold Board’s vital role in enhancing Ghana’s economy and ensuring that the country’s mineral wealth benefits its citizens,” he underscored.
