A University for Development Studies (UDS) student at the Nyankpala campus, Salifu Nurudeen, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu, a fellow student.

The incident, which occurred in September 2024, arose from a dispute over a romantic relationship.

Nurudeen’s girlfriend, also a UDS student, had terminated her relationship with him and commenced dating the victim.

On September 25, the body of Wumpini was discovered with multiple stab wounds, and his mobile phone was missing. Subsequent investigations by the police cybercrime unit led to the phone being traced to the location of Nurudeen, where it was found hidden under his bed.

Evidence presented in court indicated that Nurudeen had sent messages from Wumpini’s phone, including one to the girlfriend, simulating a breakup, and another to Wumpini’s friend.

He was subsequently arrested after being lured to Jubilee Park.

Though Nurudeen admitted to sending the text messages, he denied murdering the victim.

The Tamale High Court found him guilty of murder and subsequently sentenced him.
