A prison officer’s lifeless body has been recovered from River Pompo at Pomposo, a suburb in the Obuasi East District of the Ashanti Region.

The victim, Constable Clement Tei Gyabah, was seen in the river with his motorbike, but the circumstances leading to the incident are still unknown.

Reports from eyewitnesses indicate that the officer was seen riding his motorcycle to work at around 5 am on Wednesday, July 30, from Asokore, while it was drizzling lightly. While riding, he inadvertently left the road and struck a motorcycle positioned on a concrete barricade, which functions as a safety barrier for pedestrians between vehicles traveling on the River Pompo.

Alternatively, other eyewitnesses suggest that the officer was struck by a moving vehicle on that stretch, resulting in the unfortunate incident, as supported by the presence of lacerations on his body.

On Wednesday morning, residents and passers-by were left in shock following the discovery of the body. The Police have retrieved the body and deposited it at the morgue pending investigations.

Authorities from the Ghana Prisons Service have verified the incident and will issue a formal statement as appropriate.
