Ghana’s Parliament launches the second edition of Democracy Cup

On Thursday, July 24, 2025, Parliament officially inaugurated the second edition of the annual Democracy Cup at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House. The event symbolized another step in Parliament’s innovative approach to fostering civic engagement and national unity through football.

Inaugurated in 2024 by the Parliament of Ghana, the Democracy Cup promptly assumed a significant role as a major sporting occasion.

The first-ever edition, which took place on July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, showcased an exhilarating match where Kumasi Asante Kotoko triumphed over Accra Hearts of Oak with a 2-1 win, claiming the inaugural trophy in front of a mesmerized audience.

The Democracy Cup is more than just a football tournament; it is an integral component of Parliament’s comprehensive strategy to engage with citizens through sports and shared national events. It serves as a powerful emblem of Ghana’s democratic journey, underscoring the pivotal role that sports can play in promoting peace, cohesion, and patriotism across the nation.

The launch attracted a distinguished gathering, highlighting the tournament’s increasing significance. Attendees comprised Members of Parliament, led by the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, as well as prominent figures from the football community, including Ghana Football Association and CAF second Vice President Kurt Okraku, other football administrators, and enthusiastic club supporters.
