Ashanti Region: Police recover weapons and ammunition from abandoned vehicles

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has begun an investigation after intercepting a vehicle loaded with firearms and ammunition in the Kuntanase area.

The discovery was made on August 17, 2025, during a routine patrol along the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road, where officers spotted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta with registration No. NR 289-24 parked near a bushy area.

According to a police statement, two men were seen standing beside the vehicle, allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be narcotics.

Upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspects fled into nearby bushes and evaded capture despite a pursuit.

A search of the abandoned vehicle uncovered a cache of dangerous items, including:

– One AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546)
– One locally manufactured firearm
– Two AK-47 magazines (each loaded with 30 rounds)
– Four packets of AK-47 ammunition (25 rounds per packet)
– Seven loose rounds of ammunition
– Other personal items, including a Huawei smartphone, cowrie shells, and a Ghana Card

The police have confirmed that the vehicle has been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, and the recovered items are being held as evidence to facilitate further investigations.

The police are appealing to the public to provide any information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects, reiterating their commitment to combating violent crime in the region.
