GACL assesses Bolgatanga land ahead of airport project takeoff

The construction of an airport in the Upper East Region is expected to begin soon following the inspection of a 4,362 acre site in Bolgatanga by the Board and Management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, GACL.
The inspection formed part of a working tour of GACL operated regional airports led by the Board Chairman, James Agalga, and the Managing Director, Yvonne Opare. The visit was aimed at giving the leadership firsthand knowledge of airport operations and development needs across the country.

The tour began at the Tamale International Airport, where the Board and management met staff and examined key operational and technical areas. From Tamale, the team moved to Bolgatanga to assess the land set aside for the proposed Upper East airport.
In Bolgatanga, the GACL delegation was joined by the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, the Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur, and members of the Authority’s technical team.

The team engaged traditional leaders, landowners, and other local stakeholders, assuring them of the government’s firm commitment to the project. They said the airport is a direct fulfillment of the President’s promise to provide the Upper East Region with its own aviation facility.
Officials indicated that technical preparations are at an advanced stage and that remaining requirements are being finalized to allow construction to begin smoothly.
When completed, the Bolgatanga airport is expected to boost economic activity, improve access to the region, and strengthen security and emergency response, marking a major milestone in the region’s development.
