Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal in Dhaka.

The International Crimes Tribunal convicted her of “crimes against humanity” for her role in ordering a brutal crackdown on a student-led uprising in 2024, which reportedly resulted in up to 1,400 deaths.

Hasina, who fled to India last year, condemned the decision, calling the trial politically motivated and claiming she acted to minimize violence.

Meanwhile, her party, the Awami League, has denounced the ruling.
