Government set to rehabilitate Accra Theatre, build new theatre in Kumasi

The 2026 Budget Statement saw the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announce a major boost for Ghana’s cultural and creative sectors.
Dr. Forson revealed that the government will rehabilitate the National Theatre in Accra, while also commencing site acquisition and design for a second national theatre in Kumasi.
“This initiative will provide state-of-the-art platforms for performing arts and help nurture local talent across the country,” he said.
Moreover, the government plans to establish a Film Fund to support the revival of Kumawood and other film associations, as well as a Creative Arts Fund aimed at promoting music, fashion, food, and other creative industries.
Dr. Forson underscored that these interventions are part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s cultural identity, create jobs, and position the creative economy as a significant contributor to national development.
