Opoku-Agyemang extends condolences to families of El-Wak stampede victims

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has conveyed her condolences to the families of six young Ghanaian women who tragically lost their lives during a military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra on Thursday, November 12, 2025.

A stampede broke out among thousands of applicants seeking to join the Ghana Armed Forces, resulting in six fatalities and several others in critical conditions.

In a press statement dated Wednesday, November 12, and signed by her Press Secretary, Ama Pratt, the Vice President described the event as “deeply heartbreaking” and extended her sympathies to all those affected by the tragedy.

The Vice President of the Republic, H.E Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has received with profound sorrow the tragic news of the stampede that claimed the lives of six young Ghanaians, all aspiring to join the Ghana Armed Forces, and left many others injured.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President, extends her sincerest condolences to the families of the bereaved and wishes a swift and complete recovery to those affected.

She urges all Ghanaians to remain calm while authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and implement urgent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlights the need for comprehensive safety measures at all national recruitment exercises to safeguard lives and prevent a recurrence of such unfortunate incidents.

In the wake of the incident, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the suspension of the Military recruitment in Accra, while the Acting Defense Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured a thorough investigation into the incident.

The devastating event has sparked nationwide grief and concern, prompting calls for reforms in the conduct of large-scale recruitment exercises.
