Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, also known as “Bahubali”, has died days after a crushing defeat in a boxing match.

Reports indicate that the 27-year-old boxer passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, just a week after his last boxing event at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Akushey, who trained at the Wadada Gym in James Town, was once an undefeated prospect with a 6-0-0 record.

His “Bahubali” nickname was derived from his fierce, crowd-pleasing style, reminiscent of the warrior hero in the Indian blockbuster film.

On Saturday, September 13, Akushey engaged in his final fight against Jacob Dickson in a highly anticipated super middleweight showdown.

The bout, however, quickly became a one-sided contest, with Dickson dominating from the early rounds before achieving an eighth-round technical knockout victory.

Videos of the fight, which were widely circulated, showed Akushey struggling under relentless pressure, sparking sympathy among fans even before the tragic news of his death.

As reported by James Town TV and Africabox Showup, Akushey fell ill on Monday, September 22, complaining of undisclosed symptoms that worsened overnight. He was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. the following morning.

Sources close to the family suspect that the cause of death may be linked to internal injuries sustained during the fight against Dickson, although no official autopsy has been released.
