Korle Bu Teaching Hospital management has revealed that nearly 300 highly skilled and specialized health professionals have departed the facility between January and June 2025 in pursuit of superior opportunities abroad.

This trend, described by hospital officials as alarming, poses an escalating threat to healthcare delivery at Ghana’s premier referral center.

Deputy Medical Director of Korle Bu, Dr. Harry Akoto, disclosed the figures during an interview with the media on Thursday, September 18, amidst a needs assessment visit by the administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.

A nationwide rollout of the needs assessment initiative is set to provide financial support for individuals with chronic and non-communicable diseases not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Dr. Akoto emphasized that immediate interventions are necessary to enhance working conditions, remuneration, and training opportunities to prevent Ghana from losing its most experienced medical professionals to developed countries.

“Our data indicates that approximately 300 individuals departed between January and June this year. These individuals are highly skilled and specialized. The issues are complex, with some stemming from subpar working conditions.

However, the primary concern remains remuneration, as individuals believe better opportunities exist abroad,” he stated.
