The Accra Regional Police Command has apprehended a 39-year-old individual, Kwame Mananyi Tuanda, for allegedly trafficking cannabis utilizing a private ambulance disguised with sirens and markings.

The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, following sustained surveillance that led officers to intercept a Hyundai Hiace ambulance with registration number GX 277-20 in front of the Jamboree Drinking Spot at La Maami.

Police stated that Tuanda, who was standing beside the vehicle at the time of the arrest, admitted ownership of both the ambulance and its contents.

A thorough search revealed several sacks of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, which, upon further inspection, were packed into 700 parcels and 473 wrappers.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was loaded in Kpando in the Volta North Region and transported to Accra for distribution. Police also disclosed that Tuanda confessed to being in the illicit trade since last year.

Investigations showed that the suspect originally acquired the Hyundai Hiace as a regular car before modifying it to resemble an ambulance and installing a siren to avoid arousing suspicion. It is alleged that he previously used a Toyota Highlander for similar drug-related activities.

The police further revealed that the suspect would sometimes utilize the vehicle for transporting corpses, thus rendering his disguise more believable.

The ambulance has been confiscated, and the seized narcotics are being examined at the Police Forensic Science Laboratory. Tuanda is presently in police custody and is being prepared for court.

The Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public against exploiting legitimate service vehicles for criminal purposes and reiterated its dedication to enhancing efforts against drug trafficking.
