Artiste can't be daring and forward-thinking anymore due to social media - Amaarae

Ghanaian alté-pop star Amaarae is calling out the dark side of social media’s influence on creative expression.
In a revealing interview with British lifestyle magazine Dazed, the Fountain Baby singer opened up about how the constant pressure from online platforms is affecting artists’ ability to take risks, stay bold, and be their authentic selves.
“I think that artists and celebrities shouldn’t be on social media,” Amaarae said. “Anything and everything an artist does can and will be held against them.”
Using the backlash over Sabrina Carpenter’s controversial Man’s Best Friend album cover as an example, Amaarae said the online outrage culture is stifling artistic creativity.
“Everyone said it was misogynist — but I thought it was fire,” she added.
She believes the digital spotlight is robbing artists of the “magic” that once made their personas iconic.
“We’re so under the microscope with phones… Gaga fell at her concert the other day and it went viral. If this was 2009, she would’ve just fallen and nobody would’ve known.”
Amaarae also took aim at how everyone having a platform has diluted the role of real tastemakers and curators.
“Too many people have opinions now. We’ve lost the art of curation.”
