“They hated the light while it shone” – Shatta Wale stirs reactions following Daddy Lumba’s demise.

Following the passing of Ghanaian Highlife legend Daddy Lumba on July 26, 2025, Dancehall star Shatta Wale took to social media with cryptic posts that have sparked heated debate online.
In a Facebook post shared hours after the news broke, Shatta Wale wrote:
“They couldn’t stand your presence, but now they crave relevance through your absence.”
He later followed up on X (formerly Twitter) with another:
“They hated the light while it shined, but now they want to light candles in its name.”
While Shatta did not name anyone directly, many interpreted the posts as commentary on how society tends to celebrate legends only after they are gone. However, the tone and timing of his remarks didn’t sit well with many online.
Social media users quickly countered his narrative, insisting that Daddy Lumba — known privately as Charles Kwadwo Fosu — had long been admired and honored while alive.
Some reactions read:
• “DL was loved. No one can stand anywhere and say he wasn’t appreciated.”
• “You are always talking nonfa… DL was a national treasure and he knew it.”
• “This is unnecessary. Sometimes silence is better.”
Lumba passed away at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra, after a brief illness at the age of 60. His family has confirmed his passing through legal representatives, requesting privacy as funeral plans are being finalized.
As tributes pour in across Ghana and beyond, Shatta Wale’s remarks have reignited discussions around how we remember public figures — and when it’s appropriate to speak on it.
