An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a 33-year-old woman, Latifa Iddrisu, into police custody for a period of 14 days in connection with the alleged theft of a newborn from the Mamprobi Polyclinic.

She is scheduled to reappear before the court on March 4, 2026. The suspect allegedly committed the crime on February 18, 2026.

Reports indicate that she was disguised as a nurse and was captured on the facility’s CCTV cameras carrying the infant and leaving the premises with what appeared to be a sack.

The footage subsequently circulated widely on social media. The incident is said to have occurred shortly after the baby’s mother delivered through a cesarean section on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, triggering panic among staff and patients at the facility.

Police apprehended Iddrisu, a textile vendor in Accra, on Wednesday, February 18, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she was discovered in possession of the infant.

She was subsequently transferred to the Mamprobi Polyclinic under the Dansoman Divisional Police Command for further questioning and identification procedures.

According to the police, the infant’s mother was summoned to verify the child’s identity and successfully identified the baby through a distinctive birthmark on the left leg.

The confirmation facilitated the safe reunion of the child with the family, bringing relief to the parents after the ordeal.
