Ghana to face Mexico in May friendly ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Ghana national football team will play an international friendly match against Mexico in May as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Both teams are expected to use the match to further evaluate players who are vying for a spot in the tournament.
The Black Stars squad will comprise a combination of locally based players, Europe-based professionals who are under the close scrutiny of head coach Otto Addo, and selected U-23 prospects who are gearing up for upcoming Olympic qualifiers.
The friendly match is scheduled to take place on Friday, May 22, 2026, at a venue in Mexico that has yet to be determined.
This match will be played in the days leading up to Ghana’s encounters with two additional opponents as part of an expanded World Cup preparation program.
The fixture brings Ghana’s preparatory matches to a total of three, following the earlier confirmation of friendlies against Austria’s national football team and Germany’s national football team during the next FIFA international window in March.
In the coming days, Addo and his technical team are expected to announce the squad for those games, with the Mexico clash forming part of a broader series of test matches ahead of the tournament.
Mexico, meanwhile, will open their World Cup campaign against South Africa national football team on June 11 before facing one of South Korea national football team, Czech Republic national football team, Denmark national football team, Republic of Ireland national football team or North Macedonia national football team in the remaining Group A matches.
Ghana will begin their own campaign against Panama national football team on June 17, before further Group L encounters with England national football team and Croatia national football team as the Black Stars aim to make a strong impression on the global stage.
