President John Mahama maintains a high level of public support, despite the persistence of socioeconomic challenges, as indicated by a survey conducted by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

According to a press statement released on February 11, 2026, detailing the survey’s findings, 68 per cent of respondents approve of President Mahama’s handling of his job, while 22 per cent disapprove and 10 per cent have no opinion.

The IEA conducted the survey nationwide to assess public opinion on President John Mahama’s job performance and the prevailing socioeconomic pressures, including the cost of food, consumer goods, and unemployment. In December 2025, the poll sampled the views of over 1,000 individuals across all regions of Ghana.

Although the president’s approval rating is relatively high, the results show that most people believe he is leading the country in the right direction, yet challenges related to basic necessities remain unresolved and require his urgent attention.

The survey revealed a deep public concern about the rising cost of living, with seven out of ten Ghanaians expressing significant concern about the price of food and other consumer items.

46% of respondents identify unemployment as the most pressing national issue, making joblessness the most frequently mentioned concern. This highlights the central role of employment in public perceptions of national well-being.

The second most cited challenge, mentioned by 30% of respondents, is illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The IEA indicated that although support for the  President’s performance remains high, there are widespread concern about the cost of living, along with persistent anxiety over unemployment and illegal mining, which highlights significant challenges that continue to affect citizens.

The findings suggests that continued efforts will be needed to address citizens’ concerns and broaden public confidence.
