Seven out of 10 Ghanaians are deeply concerned about rising food prices and the escalating cost of living, according to a new survey by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA). The findings highlight persistent economic anxiety despite strong approval ratings for President John Dramani Mahama.

The survey, conducted in December 2025 and released on February 11, 2026, sampled more than 1,000 respondents across all 16 regions of Ghana. It found that 71 per cent of participants are very concerned about the increasing prices of food and other consumer goods.

Beyond food inflation, unemployment and illegal mining also emerged as major national concerns. About 46 per cent of respondents identified unemployment as one of the most pressing challenges facing the country, while 30 per cent pointed to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The IEA explained that the survey was designed to measure public opinion on prevailing socio-economic pressures one year after the 2024 general elections. It also assessed public perception of President Mahama’s performance in office.

Despite widespread concerns about the cost of living in Ghana, the President continues to enjoy significant public support. The poll shows that 68 per cent of respondents approve of how he is handling his job.

However, 22 per cent of those surveyed disapprove of the President’s performance, while 10 per cent expressed no opinion. The findings suggest that while economic hardships remain a key issue for many households, public confidence in the presidency remains relatively strong.
